How much can a landlord charge for a late rent fee in Maine?
In Maine, a late fee may not exceed 4% of one month’s rent. Rent is not late until 15 days after it is due, and no late fee may be charged before then. A late fee may be charged only if the tenant was told in writing, when the rental agreement was made, that one of up to 4% could be charged. This is 14 M.R.S. § 6028.
