Can I require a photo of a particular item?

Yes. In the template, mark the item “Photo required”. Every inspection created from that template then refuses to complete until that item has a photo, unless the item was marked not applicable. The report names the items still missing one.

From the guide Move-In & Move-Out Checklists.

Building your own checklist template

Under Templates, choose “New template” — or “Copy & edit” on one of the platform’s templates, which are never edited in place so every owner starts from the same list. A template is a set of rooms, and each room is a card you can rename, move up or down, duplicate or remove.

  • “Add an area” offers seventeen kinds of room — entry, living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, laundry, basement, garage, exterior, building systems, keys and access, and more. Each comes with the items a careful inspector looks at in that room, already filled in.
  • Inside a room, the items you have not added yet sit underneath as suggestions. Tap one to add it, or type your own.
  • Mark an item “Photo required” and the report cannot be completed until that item has a photo — unless it is marked not applicable. Items that were never inspected are not asked for one.
  • Give an item a short note (up to 200 characters), such as “Open every drawer”. It is shown beside the item to whoever walks the unit, on the website and in both apps.
  • Two rooms with the same name are refused, because a report addressed by room would not know which one you meant — call them “Bedroom 1” and “Bedroom 2”. A template holds up to 40 rooms and 60 items in each.
  • “Paste a list” still takes the old one-line-per-room form, “Kitchen: Sink; Stove; Refrigerator”, if you already have a checklist written down.
