Early-Pay Discounts on Vendor Bills

Find “2/10 net 30” terms on your bills, see what each discount is worth and when it expires, and record it correctly when you take it.

Many vendors offer a discount for paying early — “2/10 net 30” means 2% off if paid within 10 days, otherwise the full amount in 30. Paying twenty days early for 2% is worth about 37% a year on that cash. Early-pay discounts are under Accounting → Early-pay discounts on the website and in the Accounting hub of both apps.

How a discount is found

The terms are read from the bill’s own terms first, then from the vendor’s default terms. A bill with no discount term has no discount, and Seayora does not invent one. Open discounts are ranked by what they are worth and when they expire, and you are warned before one runs out.

Taking a discount

Taking a discount records your payment of the reduced amount as a normal bill payment, then applies the discount, which reduces what you owe (Purchase Discounts in your books). The discount is not a payment, so it never appears as money paid to the vendor on a 1099. If the second step fails, the bill shows exactly the discount still outstanding and “Apply the discount” finishes it.

A discount offered “if paid within 10 days” is not owed on day 11. Taking it after the deadline needs a reason — usually that the vendor agreed to honor it — and the reason is kept on the bill. Seayora records payments you make; it does not send money to a vendor.
