Messages by Email: Unread-Message Emails and Replying from Your Inbox
Get an email when messages wait unread, and answer by replying to it — your reply is added to the conversation in Seayora as you. Off until you switch it on.
If you do not open Seayora every day, a message can sit unread. Messages by email sends you one email when messages have waited unread for a while, and lets you answer by simply replying to it. Your reply is added to the conversation in Seayora as you, so the other person sees it in the thread like any other message and the whole team still has one record. It is off until you switch it on.
Switching it on
On the website, open Messages, then the settings button, then Notifications, and choose under Email. On the iPhone app it is Messages, then Settings, then Privacy & notifications. On the Android app it is Messages, then Chat appearance. The setting follows your account to every device.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Email me about unread messages | Off; Direct messages and mentions (one-to-one conversations, and a group only when you are mentioned); or Every conversation you have not muted. |
| Send it | How long a message waits unread before the email: 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or 3 hours. |
| Answer by replying to the email | On, a reply to the email is added to the conversation. Off, a reply is refused and bounced back to you with a note. |
When you get an email
- One email per conversation until you read it. More messages in the same conversation do not send a second email; reading it starts the count again.
- Never while you are using Seayora — if you are in the app or on the website, you already see the message.
- Never for a muted conversation, and for a conversation set to “Only when I am mentioned”, only when you are mentioned.
- Only for messages sent after you switched it on, and at most 20 emails a day.
- Up to six unread messages are in the email, with who sent each and when; a photo you can view once is never shown in an email.
Replying from your inbox
Reply to the email from the address on your Seayora account and write your answer above the quoted email. Seayora keeps what you wrote, removes the quoted email, your signature and “Sent from my phone” lines, and adds it to the conversation. It shows there marked “Sent by email”.
- Text only: attachments in your reply are not added, and the message says so. Send photos and files from Seayora.
- A reply from an address that is not on your account is refused, so a forwarded email cannot be used to post as you. Add your other address in Settings if you use more than one.
- Automatic replies — out-of-office messages, bounces and mailing lists — are never added.
- A reply that is only the quoted email, with nothing above it, is not added and bounces back with a note.
- If you have left the conversation, or switched replying off, the reply is refused.
Keep the reply address private
The reply address in each email belongs to you and that one conversation. Anyone who can send mail to it from your address can post as you, so do not forward the email to someone else. Turning off “Answer by replying to the email” stops every reply address at once.
What we keep
Your reply is kept in the conversation like any other message. Seayora also keeps a short record of each email it sent you and of what happened to each reply — added, refused or ignored — without the words, for 180 days. Your settings show how many emails and replies there were in the last week.
Frequently asked questions
Will the other person see that I replied by email?
Yes. A message that came back by email is marked “Sent by email” in the conversation on every device.
Why did I not get an email?
You only get one when messages have waited unread for the time you chose and you have not been using Seayora. If you already have an email about that conversation that you have not read, there is no second one.
Can I reply from my phone’s mail app?
Yes, from any mail app, as long as it sends from the address on your Seayora account.
